My style up to about five years ago is pretty embarassing, to say the least. My high school and early college years saw me dressing as a goth / punk/ "emo" kid, and not giving a flying you-know-what as to what anyone thought. I liked when the so-called popular girls made comments about my wardrobe in the hallway... it made me feel like I was making a statement and being myself.
Once upon a trip to the mall at age 16, I went into Bebe and decided to play dress-up. The girls working there said I had a great sense of style. Huh? I'd never heard that before. I went on my merry way dressing like a punk for several more years, dying my hair purple and such, but now knowing that I had a "great sense of style." I simply chose not to utilize it.

Yikes! Nice bracelets, Avril. |
I went to a very preppy, private college, and needless to say I didn't exactly fit the bill of the typical student. Many friends and acquaintances commented on the fact that I was "different." Good or bad? Who knows. Fast forward to my junior year, and I found myself in a sorority (?!) and borrowing skirts, dresses, and cute tops from my roommates. My band t-shirts had been replaced by polos (hey, it was 2006) and sorority gear.
I went on to get a Master of Arts in Theatre, and I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life until my fourth and final graduate semester. I had to make a decision for my thesis topic and I was running out of time. By now, I had fallen head-over-high heels in love with the world of fashion. My friends would ask me for style advice or to do their make-up for them. Even complete strangers would ask me if I liked their outfit! I realized I should be designing... Clothes... Theatre clothes... Costumes! A costume designer! It all seemed so clear.
This takes us up to right about now. I would love to translate my costume design experience into a career as a stylist or something in the fashion industry. What happened to my little old "emo kid" self? Well, I'm still just me. My style is still unique and a little quirky. I have always used fashion to express myself; I've just gotten better at it. :) Here's hoping that this blog helps you find your inner fashionista!
